Letters, documents, and offprints given to or purchased by the History of Science Collections from 1967-1978. Includes signed letter from John James Audubon to Robert Havell, typewritten letters to A.D. White and Simon Henry Gage, a letter from Georges Louis Leclerc de Buffon to the abbé de Launay; two letters from Schilling to Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring; a 1757 contract between James Grosett and John Newbery for the latter to manufacture various diet drinks; and documents concerning Angelo Viviani and letters to him. Also includes portraits of chemists collected and given to the History of Science Collections by Prof. John R. Johnson, mainly photographs of late-19th- and early-20th-century French, German, English, and possibly American chemists, including Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, Albrecht Haller, Justus Liebig (photograph of a bust of him), and Thénard.

Robert Havell, Jr., is best known as the aquatint engraver of John James Audubon's Birds of America (4 volumes, 1827-1839), collaborating on the project with his father, Robert Havell, Sr., who died in 1832.
